Some long time back, we wrote a feature on the top 10 most beautiful female vocalists in the world. The article went slightly viral and shortly after I received requests for writing one for male trance singers. So here we are, a while later where we have decided to do one for our male compatriots.
When it comes to male trance vocalists, it is a much more straight forward affair. There are much less trance tracks featuring male singers as compared to female vocalists. Without a shadow of a doubt, all the male vocalists featured have immerse talent and are champions on their own. This post serves as a tribute to ALL our male trance singers out there.
Number 10 – Alex Vargas
A relatively new face in the trance scene, Alex first caught our attention in 2013 when he performed as vocalist with trance legends Above & Beyond at the Greek theatre. He co-wrote two songs and sang five of the songs in Above & Beyond’s latest album ‘We Are All We Need’, which stormed into the number one spot on Billboard for US Dance Album and number twelve on the UK Album chart. Before he got into trance, his former band Vagabond had two sold out tours in the UK and has also performed at the Glastonbury.
We look forward to see if Alex could ride on the momentum and produce more addictive vocal performances like the one below.
Number 9 – Sean Ryan
Sean Ryan is an American singer and songwriter best known for his vocal work in electronic music with German trance legend ATB.
In September 2009, he was featured alongside Belgian producer Pole Folder on the single Hollow. The track, remixed by Robert Babicz, debuted on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection (BBC Radio 1) and episode 290 of Trance Around the World with Above & Beyond.
Sean became recognised as one of the top male trance singers when his vocals was subsequently featured on Polish trance producer Nitrous Oxide’s studio album, Dreamcatcher on the track ‘Come Into My World’. He would later begin co-writing tracks with ATB. ‘All I Need Is You’ and ‘Killing Me Inside, for the album Distant Earth in April 2011. This was followed by ‘When It Ends It Starts Again’ and ‘Straight to the Stars’ for the album Contact in January 2014. The album peaked at No. 1 on the Polish Music Charts and ranked highly on other charts across Europe.
Other artist collaborations include Amurai, Stoneface & Terminal, and Gabriel & Dresden.
Number 8 – Steven Moebius Albert
Albert is one half of German trance duo group, Kyau & Albert. Their collaboration started as early as 1996 and subsequently formed the trance label Euphonic Records. Albert sang on all the records for the group. His single ‘Outside’ became a hit with Paul van Dyk, who frequently playing it in his live sets. The single reached the 74th spot on the German Singles Chart.
Albert followed up the initial success with further vocal hits such as ‘Save Me’ (44th on German Chart), ‘Velvet Morning’ and ‘Are You Fine’.
Besides lending his vocals to the group, he is also a very accomplished producer. Albert continues to sing exclusively for his group.
Number 7 – Jan Burton
Welsh music producer, Jan, first tapped onto his vocal prowess when he sang for Gabriel & Dresden’s single ‘Dangerous Power’. The song won the Best Alternative Rock Dance Track in International Dance Music Awards. Moreover, it reached number 1 and number 4 of Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Air Play respectively.
That caught the attention of trance superstars Super8 & Tab. They swiftly enlisted Jan to sing on their debut album, ‘Empire’ and also their subsequent album, ‘Unified’. His vocal performance on ‘Black is Black’ was particularly memorable among trance fans, making him one of our top male trance singers.
Jan has also sang for other big name artists like Morgan Page and Eric Prydz.
Number 6 – Eric Lumiere
Eric, an American singer songwriter from California is best known for his vocals on rock trance hit song, ‘Anthem’. The Filo & Peri’s track reached number 1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance AirPlay Charts and instantly put Eric into the hot seat.
He continued to work with Filo & Peri in a number of tracks in the next few years before being recruited over by trance heavy weights Giuseppe Ottaviani and Cosmic Gate. He went on to work on his own personal album and for a few years, he seems to have faded into the backseat, but he has come back strong recently with a new release, “Everyone Needs Love” with trance legend Paul van Dyk.
Number 5 – Johnny McDaid
Johnny is part of alternative pop band group, Snow Patrol. With that group, they have sold over 13 million albums worldwide. He is even more known for being together with celebrity actress, Courtney Cox (as you can see that it’s hard enough to find a picture of him alone). To trance fans however, he is known for his collaboration with Paul van Dyk under the guise, Vega 4.
He co-wrote and sang on Paul’s big trance rock hit, Time Of Our Lives, which got to number 1 on the UK Dance and the German charts.
Johnny would later work with Paul again for another song titled ‘Home’. He also continues to have writing credits for other songs of Paul van Dyk’s and other artists such as Bo Bruce and Ed Sheeran.
Number 4 – Jonathan Mendelson
Born in Brooklyn, New York, his singing career began at a very young age.
“I would literally carry my battery powered Fisher Price radio around with me all day… Clearly I was prepping myself for things to come.”
Mendelsohn began writing his own songs at age 11. And by 2011, he got into the limelight when he sang on Dash Berlin’s hit song ‘Better Half Of Me’. He followed that up in 2012 with another impressive hit song, ‘World Falls Apart’.
Ever since, he has gone on to work on different genres of dance music, collaborating with the likes of EDM maestro Hardwell as well as hardstyle champion Brennan Heart. Other notable collaborations include Wamdue Project, Jody Wisternoff, Marco V and Nic Chagall.
We also managed to find a video of Jonathan Mendelson putting his talents at work on American TV show, Showtime At The Apollo, which is very much like “The Voice” a reality singing competition, except in a much older context. Did he win? Watch to find out.
Number 3 – Chris Jones
Chris is a British singer songwriter who was totally into rock music until being spotted by Roger Shah on then popular social media platform MySpace. Ever since, he has found love for trance music.
Riding on the rock trance wave, Chris has written and sang for producers such as Aly & Fila, Ferry Corsten, Tenishia and Sied van Riel over the last 8 years, . Unfortunately, none of those collaborations managed to surpass the success of his very first time when he entered into the trance music scene.
The song, ‘Going Wrong’ which he wrote with Roger Shah and Armin van Buuren became a hit with about 20 million hits on YouTube (a very big deal back then in 2008). After which, Chris began touring with Armin’s Imagine Album worldwide concerts.
Number 2 – Christian Burns
Christian was once part of pop boy band group, BBMak. The band had a Billboard number 1 single, ‘Back Here’, which I am sure you would have heard it on the radio at some point in your life.
Since the band broken up, Christian began heavily involved in dance music projects. His stand out songs include ‘In The Dark’ with Tiesto, ‘The Light Between Us’ with Armin van Buuren and ‘The Emergency’ with BT.
Over the years, Christian has consistently been working with various different trance and electronic dance music artists with their vocal tracks, such as Giuseppe Ottaviani, Andrew Rayel and Omnia. That solidified his position as one of the top male trance singers. He continues to be one of the most in demand vocalists today due to his versatility.
Joint Number 2 – BT
Brian Wayne Transeau, better known as BT, is a multi talented all round musician. He can play multi instruments. He is a music producer, song writer, sound designer, director, audio technician and lastly a singer.
He is the pioneer of the ‘shuttering vocal effect’. His song ‘Somnambulist’ went into the Guinness Book Of World Records with the largest number of vocal edits in a song.
BT primarily sings only for himself. However, he did sang for Tiesto’s hit song ‘Love Comes Again’, which reached 4th on the Billboard Hot Dance Single Charts.
Number 1 – Richard Bedford
British singer songwriter, Richard Bedford, gained recognition for his vocal work in trance through his collaborations with Above & Beyond on their 2011 album Group Therapy. He has itched a permanent spot in our heads with mesmerizing vocal performances in ‘Sun & Moon’ and ‘Thing Called Love’, making him our top choice for male trance singers. It is hard to described his vocal quality, but I will put it as unforgettable and easy to relate to.
What fans might not know was that his collaboration with Above & Beyond started way earlier back in 2006 for the hit track ‘Along Tonight’, where he was credited as vocals. In 2013/2014, he earned his right to perform with Armin on the Armin Only World Tour.
Richard also has extensive writing credits for Dennis Sheperd, such as the song ‘Dennis Sheperd & Cold Blue – Freefalling’.
